An unsponsored Marina Bay Sands Room Service Review (for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and even Supper!) after staying there over 10x. (I paid for these meals myself.)
Marina Bay Sands is Singapore's most iconic hotel. I've been lucky enough to stay there over 10x- if you want to know if the US$1000 (approximately) nightly rate is worth it, click for my review of Marina Bay Sands Singapore.
Along the way at MBS, I've ordered my fair share of room service meals, from breakfast to supper. Overall, the food is good but, of course, some dishes are better than others. Here's my tips on what to order and what not!
P.S. I actually hardly used to order room service at hotels as I found it a waste of money. But there's something about the new MBS rooms that makes you feel so pampered that you want to order room service! (And, of course, when I started this blog, I began ordering room service so that my hotel reviews would be more detailed and complete.)
You can view the Marina Bay Sands full room service menus here.
What You Need to Know
- It always takes around 40 minutes to arrive. (The operator will inform you.)
- If you download the MBS app, you can order room service with it. I find it hassle-free and better than calling the operator on the phone actually! (You can even use it to ask for extra toiletries, which comes super quickly.)
- You can order food for 24 hours, but from 11 pm to 5 am, there are fewer options. (You can still order Singapore chicken rice and Korean ramyeon etc, don't worry.)
- The hotel staff don't linger for tips though I'm sure they're always appreciated.
- Remember to take off the Do Not Disturb sign, or they won't be able to ring your doorbell when the food arrives!
- There are Western and Asian options (local, Indian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. ) Generally, I find the Asian food cooked better than the Western ones. If you're craving Western food, definitely head to Spago Dining Room on the 57th floor instead!
- The cheaper options are on the kids' menu, and they do allow adults to order from it.
Breakfast
Note: prices in the headings are before GST and service charge etc.
Breakfast 1: Nasi Lemak ($38)
Coconut Rice, Sambal King Prawns, Hard-boiled Egg, Chicken Rendang, Cucumber, Fried Anchovies & Fried Peanuts
Let's start with the best. This was my FAVORITE meal out of all the ones I ordered from MBS in-room dining. (Better than many at hawker-centres and food courts. I tried the Malaysian version at the Orchard Gateway Malaysian food court and the MBS one was SO much better. (The chicken is more tender.))
It was pricey (over S$40, once you add in taxes etc), but very ample. You get chicken curry AND sambal prawns with the coconut rice. If you don't have a huge appetite, it may even feed 2.
Would definitely order this again, the next time I can shell out almost $50 for Nasi Lemak LOL.
Breakfast 2: 2 organic Eggs ($49)
Fried, Scrambled, Poached, Boiled Omelette or Egg White Omelette (3 Fillings) + 1 Accompaniment
Served with Hash Browns, Molasses Baked Beans & Vine-ripened Tomato
Fillings: Parma Ham, ASC-certified Smoked Salmon, Honey Ham, Bell Peppers, Fresh Herbs, Mushrooms, Tomato, Onions, Green Chilli or Cheddar Cheese
Accompaniments: Applewood-smoked Bacon, Grilled Ham, Chicken Sausages or Pork Sausages + White/ Wheat Bread
I was Unimpressed.
I was trying to be healthy so ordered the omelette (I asked for egg whites, hence the color.) Maybe because it's meant to be a healthy dish but it tasted, well, healthy. The hash browns were good but even the sausages tasted healthy! In other words, not great and I would not order it again.
The portion was big though. They very generously gave 5 types of jam for 1 person/ 4 pieces of toast.
Breakfast 3: Japanese ($49)
Teriyaki ASC-certified Salmon, Egg Roll Omelette, Steamed Rice, Miso Soup with Tofu & Seaweed + Juice
Served with Natto Beans, Pickled Vegetables & Furikake (Dry Seasoning) Sliced Seasonal Fresh Fruits
Juices: Freshly Squeezed Orange, Green Apple, Red Apple, Watermelon, Carrot or Celery Freshly Brewed Coffee or Japanese Sencha Tea
This came with salmon and natto (fermented beans that aren't for everyone. Healthy though, and interesting.)
Call me greedy, but I was shocked by how small the salmon portion size is! (Portions at the Japanese restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel, Wakuda, are much more generous. Taste better too!)
It's also a tad dry for my liking. (Well-cooked.) I made the same complaint about the salmon at Koma MBS, one of the Japanese restaurants in Marina Bay Sands Shoppes, so maybe it's my taste buds?
However, there definitely wasn't enough sauce, since we're given a bowl of white rice. And I actually think my teriyaki salmon recipe tastes better 😛 The rice was nicely cooked though.
Wouldn't order this again.
Lunch
Note: You have the same menu for lunch and dinner.
Lunch 1: Kung Pao Chicken ($26) + Rice ($5)
Stir-fried Boneless Chicken Thigh Cubes, Cashew Nuts, Dried Chilli & Onions with Rock Sugar & Black Vinegar Sauce
This was delicious. However, Americans may find it different from what they expect. There's very little sauce, but still very scrumptious nonetheless.
I do find $5 for a bowl of rice a tad steep but it is a five-star hotel and the rice was well-cooked.
Lunch 2: Salmon Aglio Olio ($48)
Spaghetti Tossed in Olive Oil with Chilli Flakes & Garlic Pan-seared ASC-certified Salmon
This was OK. Not bad but not something I would order again. As with the Japanese breakfast set, I found the salmon cooked a tad too firm for my liking.
However, the amount of bread given is super generous!
Lunch 3: Nasi Goreng Kampung ($32)
"Malaysian-style Spicy Fried Rice with Shrimp, Deep-fried Chicken Wings, Anchovies, Sunny-side-up Egg & Prawn Crackers"
This was good. I'd be happy to have it again! But the ingredients weren't as generous as the Nasi Lemak. The chicken wings were SUPER crispy and I could have eaten many more of them! (They made me want to order the Gochujang Wings but I decided not to make myself any fatter than I already am!)
Dinner
Dinner 1: Vegetarian Hot and Sour Soup ($18) + Szechuan Cold Chicken in Chili Oil ($18)
Soft Tofu, Bamboo Shoots, Black Fungus, Mushrooms, Carrots & Red Vinegar
Poached Sakura Chicken, Szechuan Chilli Oil, Peanut, Spring Onion & Sesame Seeds
Both were good. The chicken actually looked not-well-done, but tasted VERY good! The mouthnumbingness of the Sichuan peppercorns was just the right amount!
Dinner 2: XO Fried Rice ($26)
Egg, Shrimp, Mixed Vegetables & Spring Onion
A dud.
The stir-frying skills at Blossom restaurant are quite good so I'm guessing the Chinese room service food is not from there. I couldn't taste the wok hei (breath of the wok) and there was TOO LITTLE XO Sauce!
Dinner 3: Laksa ($27)
Thick Rice Noodles with ASC-certified King Prawns, Boiled Egg, Bean Sprouts, Fish Cakes, Beancurd in a Spicy Coconut Broth
The portion was very large- enough to feed 2. It came with 3 prawns and you could taste the dried prawns ground up in the soup as well as the bursts of laksa leaf (marks of a well-made laksa.)
Would be happy to order again.
Dinner 4: Wonton Mee from the kids' menu ($18)
Local Egg Noodles with Shrimp Wantons, Baby Bok Choy & Superior Broth
It's from the kid's menu but more than enough to feed an adult in my opinion. Note that it's Hong Kong style (in soup) not local style.
Maybe because it's for kids but there's slightly less seasoning used, though the soup still smelt extremely fragrant. The noodles were al dente, and the wantons good.
Dinner 5: Dan Dan Mian ($26)
Egg Noodles, Minced Kurobuta Pork, Shredded Cucumber, Spring Onion & White Sesame Seeds with Spicy Hot Bean Sauce
This was OK, it tasted decent but not amazing enough that I'd order it again.
Now to work off your meal, why not check out the MBS rooftop infinity pool?
