Jump to:
Retirement in Asia is becoming increasingly popular among expat retirees due to the region's affordability, warm climate, and rich culture.
However, before making the decision to retire in Asia, it is important to understand the retirement plans, visa requirements, and financial considerations. Depending on the type of retirement lifestyle you desire, as well as the amount of retirement funds at your disposal, your idea of what makes the "best place to retire in Asia" would vary!
Luckily, I have a recommendation for every budget and lifestyle below!
Things to Consider
Here are some factors to consider when searching for a place to retire in Asia:
Residence Status
Do you want to reside in the country on a retirement visa or as a Permanent Resident?
Visas
Some countries in Asia offer retirement visas for expat retirees.
These visas typically require proof of a minimum monthly income and a certain number of years of age. It is important to research the visa requirements and application process for each country before making a decision.
Permanent Residency
Other countries in Asia offer permanent residency for expat retirees.
This status provides long-term residency and may offer additional benefits, such as the ability to work or start a business. It is important to research the requirements and benefits of permanent residency in each country.
Note that there may be a financial requirement for granting such residencies,
Budget
How much do you have set aside for your retirement?
Asian countries have very different costs of living. Many countries in Asia offer a lower cost of living than many Western countries, making it an attractive option for retirees looking to stretch their retirement savings. However, a place like Chiang Mai has a very different cost of living compared to places like Singapore and Japan (2 of the most expensive cities in Asia)!
If you're looking to stretch your money, some of the more affordable countries to retire in Asia are:
- Thailand
- Indonesia
- Vietnam
- India
Note: again, this depends on where in Thailand or Vietnam you're based!
These countries offer a lower cost of living, with monthly expenses ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 per month, depending on the region and lifestyle. For example, in parts of Thailand, you can live comfortably on a monthly income of $1,500, while in parts of Vietnam, it can be as little as $1,000 per month.
Cheaper Real Estate
1 of the main reasons for the lower cost of living in these countries is the lower cost of real estate.
Retirees who are interested in real estate investments may also find Asia to be an attractive option. Many countries in Asia allow foreigners to purchase property, and the cost of real estate is generally lower than in Western countries. Some of the most popular destinations for real estate investments in Asia include Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
Overall, when evaluating the cost of living in Asia, retirees should consider their monthly income, lifestyle, and real estate investment options. By carefully evaluating these factors, retirees can find an affordable and comfortable place to retire in Asia.
Note: Retirees in Asia may benefit from consulting with a financial advisor to help propose retirement plans to manage their finances and investments. This helps them enjoy passive income coming in during their non-working years. It is very important to find a reputable advisor who understands the local laws and regulations and will not make unscrupulous recommendations. Moreover, keep in mind that all investments comes with a risk.
Healthcare
As 1 ages, 1's healthcare needs often goes up. As such, the healthcare capabilities of a country should play an important role when deciding where to spend one's golden years.
As mentioned above, Vietnam and Indonesia are much cheaper places to live than Singapore, but the healthcare in Singapore is much better than Vietnam or Indonesia. Many wealthy Vietnamese and Indonesians actually fly to Singapore for medical advice. Whilst this option is also open to foreign retirees, if they have serious medical conditions that might require urgent medical care, they should make sure that the local healthcare capabilities suit them.
Private vs Public
When it comes to healthcare for retirees in Asia, there are both public and private options available.
The quality of healthcare varies from country to country, but some Asian countries offer excellent health care at a fraction of the cost of what retirees would pay in the United States or Europe.
In countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, medical care is generally of a high standard, with both public and private hospitals available. Private hospitals tend to be more expensive than public hospitals, but they offer higher levels of service and shorter waiting times. Public hospitals, on the other hand, are more affordable and offer a good standard of care.
Retirees who prefer private insurance can choose from a range of options, with many international insurance companies operating in Asia. Private insurance can be expensive, but it offers peace of mind and access to high-quality medical care.
For those who prefer to use the public system, most Asian countries have a national health insurance scheme that provides access to basic medical care. However, the quality of care can vary, and waiting times can be long.
Lifestyle and Climate
When people imagine retiring in Asia, they envision enjoying a relaxed lifestyle in a beautiful and diverse part of the world. (However, do note that some cities in Asia have the worst traffic jams in the world- not very relaxing at all!)
The region offers a range of climates, from tropical to temperate, and boasts some of the world's most stunning natural beauty.
For those who love the beach, Asia has no shortage of beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches to choose from, such as:
- Bali, Indonesia
- Phuket, Thailand
The warm climate in many parts of Asia also makes it an ideal destination for those who love outdoor activities. From hiking in national parks to swimming in the ocean, there is something for everyone. However, parts of Asia can be prohibitively hot and humid, so do your research before you move!
In addition to the beaches and outdoor activities, Asia also offers a rich cultural experience. From the bustling cities of Tokyo and Bangkok to the historic temples of Cambodia and Vietnam, there is no shortage of things to see and do.
The climate in Asia varies depending on the region. The tropical climate of Southeast Asia means warm weather all year round, with high humidity during the rainy season. The temperate climate of Japan and South Korea means mild summers and cold winters, with beautiful autumn foliage and cherry blossoms in the spring.
Local Culture and Cuisine
Retiring in Asia offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in a rich and diverse culture while enjoying delicious and affordable cuisine. From street food to high-end restaurants, Asia has something for everyone.
Each country in Asia has its unique culture and customs that are reflected in its cuisine. For example, Thailand is known for its spicy and flavorful dishes, while Japan is famous for its sushi and ramen. China offers a wide range of regional cuisines, including Sichuan, Cantonese, and Hunan, each with its distinct flavors and ingredients.
1 of the best ways to experience the local culture is through street food. In many Asian countries, street food is an integral part of the culture, offering a wide range of affordable and delicious dishes. In Thailand, for example, street vendors offer everything from pad thai to mango sticky rice. In Vietnam, you can enjoy a bowl of pho or banh mi sandwich from a roadside food cart.
In addition to the food, Asia also offers a rich cultural experience. Each country has its unique traditions, festivals, and customs that are worth exploring. For example, in Japan, you can witness the beauty of cherry blossom season or attend a traditional tea ceremony. In India, you can experience the colorful and vibrant festival of Holi or visit the iconic Taj Mahal.
Safety
When considering a retirement destination in Asia, safety should be a top priority. Many countries in the region have relatively low crime rates, making them relatively safe places to live.
However, note that different countries have different cultural taboos, and it is important to follow them to stay safe when in a foreign country. For instance, in Thailand, it is considered extremely rude and offensive to touch someone's head or hair.
Note: Women need to be very careful in India so do factor that into your decision making process.
Thailand
Thailand is known for its friendly and welcoming culture, and it is generally considered a safe place for retirees. The crime rate in Thailand is relatively low, and violent crime is rare. However, it is important to be aware of petty crime, such as pickpocketing and theft, especially in tourist areas.
Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is a popular destination for retirees in Thailand. It is known for its low cost of living, excellent healthcare, and beautiful natural surroundings. The city is home to many expat communities, making it easy to meet new people and make friends. Chiang Mai is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with many temples and historical sites to explore.
Hua Hin
Hua Hin is a coastal city in Thailand and a popular retirement destination for many expats. The city is known for its beautiful beaches, excellent healthcare, and low cost of living. It is also home to many golf courses and has a large expat community. Hua Hin is easily accessible from Bangkok, making it a convenient location for retirees.
Malaysia
Malaysia is generally considered a safe country, although there are some areas that are more prone to crime than others. It is important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia and a popular retirement destination in Southeast Asia. The city is known for its modern infrastructure, excellent healthcare, and low cost of living. It is also a major transportation hub, making it easy to travel to other parts of Asia. Kuala Lumpur is home to many expat communities and has a large international airport.
I actually have relatives who retired in Malaysia and was previously considering doing the same. This is probably going to get me a lot of hate mail from Malaysians, however, after spending a few months in KL, I do not recommend it as a place to spend your golden years.
George Town
Instead, Penang is a much better location for foreign retirees who enjoy delicious food (if you don't mind the awful traffic.)
George Town is the capital city of Penang, Malaysia and a popular retirement destination in Southeast Asia. The city is known for its rich history, excellent food, and low cost of living. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with many historical sites to explore.
Singapore
When you see Singapore on this list of best places to retire in Asia, you may be laughing in disbelief.
After all, Singapore is well-known as an expensive place to live and many retirees are quite cost-conscious, having "lost" their salary. However, as mentioned earlier, based on the retiree's budget and lifestyle, their retirement requirements will be different.
Singapore is 1 of the best places to retire in Asia IF the retiree has a lot of money, doesn't want the hassle of learning a new language and is very concerned about law and public order. (For more of the advantages and disadvantages of life in Singapore, click here.)
P.S. Here's what to pack for a trip to Singapore if you've decided to fly over to do your research!
Higher Standard of Living
Singapore is 1 of the most modern and cosmopolitan countries in Asia and, with the right bank balance, you'll undoubtedly be able to enjoy 1 of the highest standards of living in Asia there.
In addition, with a large expat community comes shops. You'll be able to get most of the things you enjoyed in your home country in Singapore too (for a price.) For example, there are so many Western and Japanese restaurants in Singapore.
English-speaking
Singapore tops the list of English-speaking Asian countries.
Although learning a new language can be fun, it can be very stressful if you need to have a certain level of proficiency to get important things done (e.g. fixing a burst pipe or dealing with the local government.)
Most Singaporeans speak English and the administrative language is also English (i.e. the government works in English), so there would be no language issues for English-speakers retiring in the small city-state.
Safe
Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world.
The crime rate in Singapore is extremely low, and the country has strict laws and regulations that help to maintain a safe environment for residents and visitors alike.
Japan
Like Singapore, Japan is another expensive country that is known for its safety. The crime rate in Japan is low, and violent crime is rare.
However:
- it is important to be aware of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and typhoons, which can occur in Japan.
- Moreover, Japan is notoriously difficult for foreigners to integrate into, even if you speak the local language!
- Most retirees don't speak Japanese and most Japanese don't speak good English!
Korea
What with the emergence of K-drama, Korea has become increasingly prominent, with interest in the country at an all-time high.
Many K-pop devotees imagine living or retain in the country. Like Singapore and Japan, Korea is very modern, with high standards of living and good quality healthcare. These 2 things come at a cost and, like Singapore and Japan, Korea is more expensive to live in than, say, Philippines. For more information about the cost of living in Seoul, click here.
Also note that most Koreans do not speak English fluently so you may find it difficult to integrate in the country if you retire outside of a big city. Here are more things you should know about Korea before living there!
